Ybor City is an historic district in Tampa, Florida named for the famed cigar manufacturer Vicente Martinez Ybor. Located northeast of downtown Tampa, Florida, Ybor City was founded in the 1880s on the cigar manufacturing industry. Thousands of mostly Hispanic immigrants from Cuba, Spain and Italy populated Ybor City looking for work in the cigar manufacturing industry until the 1950s. Ybor City, Florida enjoys a rich and unique history since its founding in the 1880s when cigar magnate Vicente Martinez Ybor relocated his operations to the area. Until the 1930s, Ybor City was a thriving center of cigar manufacturing where literally millions of cigars were rolled annually. After a period of abandonment that coincided with the decline of the cigar industry in the post-World War II era, the original neighborhood was finally restored many decades later. Today, part of the original Ybor City, Florida historic district is a popular area for nightlife and entertainment.
